Game of Thrones season 5 finale review and predictions for season 6

1:54 AM

Warning! If you haven't yet watched the Game of Thrones season 5 finale, then do not read further as this post contains spoilers. Game of Thrones season 5 has been a bloody season which was filled with shocking moments and it ended in the same way. Since the 1st season we have seen that it is foolish to believe that just because a character is important, it won't die. We have seen Khal Drogo, Ned Stark, Robb and Catelyn Stark and many other important characters die and it would be foolish to believe that such a thing wouldn't happen again on the show. The 5th season has ended with many big deaths and on a cliffhanger for other characters and we will have to wait another year to know what will happen next.

Stannis Baratheon

Stannis Baratheon - Game of Thrones season 5 finale review and predictions The episode starts on a bad note for Stannis. Stannis who is angry with Melisandre for what she made him do receives news that nearly half the men deserted him and immediately he receives another bad news about his wife Selyse who is found hanging from a tree. Apparently burning Shireen did not help him in anyway and after all this even Melisandre leaves him. Things couldn't get worse for Stannis, whose army was already struggling in the North. Still, Stannis is determined to march on to Winterfell. However when he reaches, he finds out that the Bolton army is already on their way to attack them. Stannis's army is outnumbered and it turns into a massacre. Stannis somehow manages to survive but he meets Brienne of Tarth who fulfills her vow and it looks like she kills Stannis. However in the process of doing that she misses the signal that Sansa sends for her, thus adding another failed task in the long list since her character was introduced in the show.

Ramsay Bolton

Ramsay successfully defeats Stannis' army and makes sure that there is no person who stays alive. The Boltons have had a good run in this season. Everything has been going their way since the start of the season but this is the Game of Thrones and something has to go wrong (Read: Sansa escapes)

Sansa Stark

Sansa Stark - Game of Thrones season 5 finale review and predictionsSansa who has been having a terrible time since the series started, finally took things in her own hand and sent the signal. Sadly the person who was supposed to save her was busy somewhere else. Sansa meets Myranda and Reek on the way and Myranda is in no mood to be nice to her. Luckily, Reek throws Myranda down the wall and kills her and as Ramsay enters Winterfell, he decides that they have no other option other than escaping. So both of them jump down from the walls. We just hope that the snow was thick or else Reek and Sansa will have a painful landing.

Arya Stark

Arya Stark - Game of Thrones season 5 finale review and predictionsArya just showed us that she can now change faces like Jaqen H'ghar does and she gets her revenge by killing Meryn Trant in the most brutal way possible. Arya returns to the House of Black and White, where Jaqen isn't happy with what she has done. "A girl stole from the Many-Faced God. Only death can pay for life", Jaqen says and then he drinks the poison. Arya is shocked to see him die and starts crying but then she finds out that Jaqen is actually alive and standing behind her. She then peels off faces from what used to be the body of Jaqen and on after another the faces change untill she sees her own face. Jaqen then tells her that she should have been no one before taking a face from the hall as the faces are for no one but she is still a someone. For a someone, the faces are good as poison. Arya starts loosing her sight and then turns blind. That definitely isn't a happy ending for her.

Jaime and Myrcella Lannister

Jaime bids farewell to Dorne and Elarria Sand gives a goodbye kiss to Myrcella. On the ship Jaime finds out that Myrcella already knows that he is her father and she is glad to know that. It seemed to be a happy ending but then blood starts flowing from her nose and that's the moment we realise that she is going to die. Now we know that the jail scene between Bronn and the Sand Snakes wasn't a random scene just to show boobs. They wanted to show us how deadly the poison is.

Daenerys Targaryen

Daenerys Targaryen - Game of Thrones season 5 finale review and predictionsMeanwhile in Meereen Tyrion, Jorah and Daario decide that they should try to find Daenerys at the earliest. In the end it is decided that Jorah Mormont and Daario Naharis will go and search for Daenerys while Tyrion, Greyworm and Missandei will stay back and take care of Meereen. Luckily Lord Varys comes to Tyrion's rescue and agrees to help him to take care of the situation in Meereen. Meanwhile Daenerys and Drogon are on top of a mountain with Drogon in no mood to take her back to Meereen. He just wants to sleep and do nothing. So Daenerys goes out on her own to look for food, where she is surrounded by hundreds of Dothraki warriors. We have no idea if it's going to be good or bad for her but seeing how things happened in the episode, it might be bad.

Cersei Lannister

Cersei Lannister - Game of Thrones season 5 finale review and predictionsCersei has had a bad time since the High Sparrow threw her in prison. Finally she realises that the only way to get out is by accepting her sins. She admits to sleeping with Lancel Lannister but denies any incest charge. The High Sparrow agrees to let he visit the Red Keep but he says that she must atone first and that's where the horrible time for her starts, she is undressed and scrubbed and her locks are chopped and then she is made to walk naked in front of the city. Cersei tries her best to be strong during the walk but then the people start throwing abuses at her and they even throw food and excrement at her and even spit on her. Her feet start bleeding and then she almost breaks down but she sees the Red Keep and continues walking. Finally as she reaches the Red Keep, the Rains of Castamere starts playing. Cersei is unable to control her tears once she enters the gates. Qyburn rushes and covers her with a cloak and introduces her to the newest member of the Kingsguard, who seems like a Frankenstein version of The Mountain.

Jon Snow

Jon Snow - Game of Thrones season 5 finale review and predictionsBack at the Wall, Jon Snow refuses Davos Seaworth support and at that moment Melisandre arrives with a sad look on her face. Jon Snow and Davos ask her about Stannis and Shireen but she looks at Davos and moves ahead. Later Olly comes and tells Jon Snow that someone knows about his uncle Benjen Stark and that he is alive. Jon can't believe this and he rushes to meet the person, only to find out that it's a trap. Ser Alliser and others surround him and it's Alliser who stabs him first and says, "For the Watch". He is stabbed by others also and in the end its Olly who drives the dagger through his heart. Jon Snow falls on the ground, lying in the pool of his blood and the episode gets over.

Predictions for next season:

If we go by what happens in the books, Sansa and Reek land safely and try to run away. This is where Brienne will come to her rescue and save her.

Ramsay will be furious when he comes to know that Sansa escaped and we might see a fight between Brienne and the Boltons.

Arya paid the price by not leaving her past behind and acting on her own. She lost her eyesight in the season finale. In the next season she might have to prove to Jaqen that she is serious about becoming a Faceless man and she might be given tasks even though she is blind. Once she shows her dedication, she might get her eyesight back. Myrcella will mostly die and it will lead to series of events.

Ellaria Sand might be sentenced to death and the Sand Snakes will have to face tough times. It's not sure how Jaime will react but there will be a war on the horizon.

Daenerys met Dothraki warriors in the end who might lead by Khal Jhaqo. He is the person who declared himself a Khal when Khal Drogo fell ill. So we can't say if Daenerys will get a friendly welcome or not.

Now that Cersei has atoned for her sins, she might have to prove her innocence and it will be by the way of trial by combat and is that situation arises, she will choose the Mountain as her fighter.

Jon Snow seems to be dead but there's one good news. Melisandre has returned to Castle Black and we know that Red Priests are able to resurrect people. Melisandre has talked about Azor Ahai before and this is what she has said, "After a long summer, Azor Ahai will be reborn amidst smoke and salt wielding the flaming sword Lightbringer to defend the world from R'hllor's nemesis". It has been a long summer and Winter has just started and now that Jon Snow has died, if she resurrects him, he will be reborn. Now Jon Snow doesn't have a flaming sword but Valyrian steel is forged out of Dragon fire, so that might be one explanation. So it might happen that Jon Snow turns out to be Azor Ahai, who will save the realm from the White Walkers. We would like to know your views about these theories.
